vcenter 6.5 configuration
Synopsis
This page describes the base installation procedure of new vCenter with embedded database. In the second part of the document is described the replacement procedure from exist production vCenter 5.5u3d
Install procedure
- Create the new DNS records and reserve the IPs in IPAM. Create alias for "vcenter2"
- Download installation media - https://download2.vmware.com/software/vc/65/vsan66/VMware-VCSA-all-6.5.0-5318154.iso (version 6.5d)
- Mount the ISO file in Virtual CD or use 7zip or other software to get VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-6.5.0.5500-5318154_OVF10.ova file from "vcsa" directory;
- Deploy new vcenter vm/appliance from .ova file using exist vCenter in MGMT cluster;
- From vCenter File→ Deploy OVF Templete → Select .ova file;
- Verify VMware vCenter Server Appliance version → 6.5.0.5500
- Accept the agreement (2x pages) and follow the setup wizard;
- Set appliance name - follow FG naming convention → fg[prd|td]-vcenter[ ,2]-[<datacenter>]-app001, e.g. fgprd-vcenter2-va3-app001;
- Select vm to be assigned to "Administrative" group;
- Select configuration - depend of the size of the environment and future environment. In vCenter version 6.5+, Backboard is going to use only embedded database;
- The vm will be deployed in mgmt cluster;
- Use designated datastore to mgmt cluster (bbcs is preferable);
- Storage deployment should be always - Thin Provisioning
- Network → VLAN 4021;
- Set vApp setting and example below:
- Once the new appliance boot there background processes which configure the appliance. It may take around 10 min till initial configuration complete (see screenshots below).

- Login to vm console and verify that all network settings are populated by the vApp;
- Login to administrative web interface → https://<host>:5480
- Start the "Set up vCenter Server Appliance";
- Verify Network configuration and enable SSH access;
- Set SSO configuration
- Verify that vCenter wizard is completed
- Login to vcenter administrative interface (port 5480)→ https://<vcenter2-ip>:5480/
- Wait and verify that vCenter services are started
- Login to regular vCenter interface → https://<vcenter2-ip>
- Add proper vCenter and ESXi licenses - Administration → Licenses
- Once the licenses are added to vCenter, but in v.6.5 need to be assigned:
- Enable CA and CS LDAP - Login with SSO account to vCenter, e.g. administrator@vsphere.local
- Identity source → CS Ldap config → CS LDAP - WebApp Client Configuration
- Identity source → CS Ldap config → CS LDAP - WebApp Client Configuration
